TEI22 Studio OPEN CALL – New Publication Formats

How Tangible is TEI? Exploring Swatches as a New Academic Publication Format

OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

In the past years, we have seen new publication and presentation formats emerge such as Video, Pictorials, Art, Design and Performance tracks. However, these formats largely rely on imagery and writing for digital publication. With this Studio, we would like to provide a platform for examining the possibilities and potentials – as well as potential problems – of physical publication formats. In particular we are interested in the tangible-physical publication form of Swatches.

We see the TEI Conference on Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interaction as the perfect place to explore such a possibility, and to open up discussion more generally around boardening academic publishing to be inclusive towards new knowledges and new participants in order to advance academic practice.

After running the TEI21 Student Design Challenge as a Swatch Exchange, in this Studio we would like to gather a group of participants with diverse professional backgrounds, including, but not limited to: practice-based research, conference organisation, diversity and accessibility in order to discuss and evaluate this proposal.

If you would like to attend this studio, please formulate a max. 500 word position statement in which you share your perspectives regarding a new physical publication format. We would like to hear about your motivations regarding this topic, and your thoughts and opinions about the viability of such an endeavour, as well as any open questions you would like to bring into the discussion. While we would love to include all interested individuals in the discussion, in order to keep the group small enough to have all voices heard within the time-constraints of our session, we may well have to make a selection of max. 12 participants. In this case we will make our selection based on your position statements, aiming to compose a diverse group of backgrounds, perspectives and opinions.

Please read the full Studio Proposal for details about the studio approach, goals and schedule. If you have any questions, please email: teipublicationformat@ufg.at

  • Title of swatch
  • Author(s) of swatch
  • Description of swatch (max 150 words)
  • List of materials, tools, techniques used in producing the swatch
  • Sketch or mock-up photo of the swatch
  • Links/References

The goal of mock swatch exchange submission is to give you the experience of submitting work to this format. If you feel your practice does not produce work suitable to the swatch exchange format, be creative with how you could interpret the format to include your work. Also feel free to get in touch with any questions you have regarding this part.

One author of each accepted position must attend the workshop and register for the Studio through TEI conference registration system. We intend for the Studio to be as accessible as possible. If you intend to participate and are not funded by a university or this amount is for any other reasons hard pay, feel free to contact us to discuss participation options.

We look forward to hearing from you!
